England making steady progress at Emirates Durham ICG

England are 57-1 at Lunch in the 4th Investec Ashes Test at the Emirates Durham International Cricket Ground.

Captain Alastair Cook won the toss and elected bat in the north east sunshine. He and fellow opener Joe Root strode out to the middle to lead the Three Lions out for the first time in an Ashes Test at Durham.

Australia's Ryan Harris sent down the first over of the day from the Lumley End and started with a maiden. That theme of attrition was to continue throughout the morning as just three boundaries were scored in the first session.

England made it to 34 without trouble before Joe Root fell to Shane Watson for 16 when he was caught behind by Brad Haddin. Umpire Tony Hill at first gave it not out and Michael Clarke immediately called for  a review, which proved the Yorkshire man had edged the ball.

Cook and new batsman Jonathan Trott steadied the ship and guided the Three Lions past 50 in the 21st over and continued in the that fashion until the Lunch break.
