England struggle on first day of 4th Test at Emirates Durham ICG

England struggled against Australia on day one of the 4th Investec Test as the Ashes arrived at Durham for the first time.

Three Lions skipper Alastair Cook won the toss and elected to bat on a sunny morning at the Emirates Durham International Cricket Ground.

England lost Joe Root early on for 16 but Cook and Jonathan Trott steadied the ship to guide them past the 100 run mark after Lunch.

Trott was playing fluently but fell one run short of his half-century as he became the first of Nathan Lyon's four victims when he was caught at short-leg by Usman Khawaja.

Kevin Pietersen arrived at the crease and immediately took the attack to Lyon, while Cook nurdled his way to his 32nd Test match half-century as England started to take the game to the Baggy Greens.

However, Lyon returned with a bang and got the wicket of Pietersen as he edged behind to Brad Haddin for 26, while Cook departed minutes later leaving a straight delivery from Jackson Bird.

Ian Bell, then tried to become the innings aggressor but he fell trying to loft Lyon over mid-off as he hit the ball into the hands of Ryan Harris.

Matt Prior and Jonny Bairstow struggled to score and both fell cheaply to Siddle and Lyon respectively for scores of 17 and 14.

They were soon followed back to the pavilion by Stuart Broad, who skied a ball from Harris to Warner, while Swann departed in a similar fashion as he picked out Lyon at the fence at deep square leg attempting to hook the ball.

Tim Bresnan and James Anderson, had a late flurry of boundaries to help England reach 238-9 at the close of the play.
